Stories from August, 2008:

Kin of man killed by Oakland cop file claim
The family of an unarmed drunken-driving suspect who was shot and killed by an Oakland police officer last month has filed a $10 million claim against the city, citing a previous fatal shooting as evidence that the officer was improperly trained.
Oakland sexual-assault suspect arrested after rooftop standoff
A rooftop standoff with a sexual-assault suspect ended about 4:30 p.m. Monday when police tackled the man and took him into custody.
Man fatally shot in his old East Oakland neighborhood
A 19-year-old man was shot to death Sunday night while visiting the East Oakland neighborhood where he used to live, police said.
Police said Anthony L. Davis was shot about 9:48 p.m. Sunday in the 3400 block of 64th Avenue Place a residential cul-de-sac off MacArthur Boulevard that runs between the Evergreen Cemetery and the former Burbank Elementary School.
Jailed leader of Your Black Muslim Bakery launches
Yusuf Bey IV, jailed leader of Your Black Muslim Bakery, is reaching out from his cell to tell the world that he’s not responsible for the shooting death of Oakland Post editor Chauncey Bailey.
Before The Bell Rings
You can almost hear that school bell ringing as summer draws to a close. Feel like you and your kids need just one or two more breaks before you start packing lunches and signing permission slips? While most Oakland students return to school Monday, August 25, there is still time to enjoy a few field trips Oakland style. Turn off the Summer Olympics, put down that back-to-school shopping list, and try a horse show, an outdoor musical, a dance recital, or a movie viewed from the cool waters of your local pool.
Take An Oakland Port Cruise
To wrap up the summer, consider taking a free cruise through the Port of Oakland - the fourth busiest container port in the U.S. This tour sounds like something fun to do with your kids, who should be thrilled to see the big cranes and container ships in our busy seaport.
More new principals for Oakland schools
The school board doesn’t approve the latest round of new principal hires until Wednesday’s meeting, but I found a 2008-09 school directory posted online with most of their names. Ann Kruze, who announced her retirement from Redwood Heights this summer, was still listed as principal. Maybe she had a change of heart… or maybe it was a typo.
Don’t forget those shots!
School starts just two weeks from today, but not for new students without immunization cards!
Sherri Willis, the public information officer for the Alameda County Public Health Department, said that when she worked in OUSD, hundreds of kids would miss the first few days of school — in some cases, more — as a result.
Paul Cobb Says Chauncey Bailey Was “Stalked And Targeted”
I quite literally stumbled over this video just a few seconds ago before I viewed it, and was shocked. You’ve got to see it. It charges — via the words of Oakland Post Publisher and long-time Oaklander Paul Cobb that in late 2007, The Oakland Police were less concerned with investigating the murder of Chancey Bailey, than “getting” Your Black Muslim Bakery.
Statistical surprise: Civil servants overpaid
Over the last month, A Better Oakland has presented three different measurements of Oakland’s employee compensation, which is currently being negotiated with the unions by a professional team under the direction of the Interim City Administrator and the Council. These are excellent data to determine an appropriate level of city employee compensation. The data show that Oakland has the highest average payroll in the entire country, that most employee positions are paid far more than in regional municipalities, and that city employees have received cost of living raises totaling more than 10% over the CPI since 2002. To put that in perspective, 10% of the city’s payroll* is $59m, more than enough to pay for the LLAD deficit and the police service ballot measure.
Oakland salaries higher than Bay Area averages
So, a couple of weeks ago, I posted some Census Bureau data listing employees per capita and average monthly payroll for the fifty largest cities in the US. The chart raised quite a few eyebrows, as Oakland had by far the highest average payroll on the list. Those interested in our comparative rate of compensation may find this document (PDF) even more revealing. It compares salaries in Oakland to the median and mean of salaries for the same positions in the 13 largest cities and counties in the Bay Area, and finds that in almost every case, Oakland’s salary is significantly higher than area standards, as much as 20% higher for some positions.
Manhunt on Athol Ave.
People in my neighborhood, like many Oakland neighborhoods, complain that they don’t see enough of a police presence around. Well, in the “be careful what you wish for” department, this is the scene at the corner of Athol Ave. and Acton right now (about 4:30 on Monday afternoon):
Oakland teen already breaking records
As track runners from around the world prepare for the 2008 Olympic triathlon in China, an East Oakland teenager continues training hard on the heels of her record-breaking hurdles run two weeks ago.
An ode to Oakland fog
Every summer, Oaklanders are reminded of the sheer wonder of local fog. We have an ephemeral sort of fog, arriving in the late afternoon and departing by mid-day in most cases. It’s not very windy or violent, since we’re far from the ocean…
Walk, explore life and times of Joaquin Miller
THE OAKLAND Heritage Alliance summer walking tours are continuing in August. Today’s tour, from 10 a.m. until noon, explores the life and times of the “poet of the Sierras,” Joaquin Miller, who lived from 1835 to 1913.
Lillie Jue - Another Ex-Tenant Complaint Sent To Oakland Focus
Lillie Jue is the manager of The Jue Trust and owns several buildings in Oakland and the Bay Area. A petite elderly woman of Chinese American decent, “Mrs Jue” as she’s called out of respect, is someone you’re compelled to like because she’ parental in her manner. But what many have discovered — including me — is that she’s a landlord that has several rent board complaints against her and questionable practices.
